The trauma may be in the form of a death of someone close to you or an accident that changes your life. When you suffer a trauma there is always a feeling of isolation and feeling of nothing you can do and control is lost. For some traumas, there is the feeling of being violated. Sometimes you feel like you are in constant danger and are not safe. These thoughts and feelings become overpowering and take over your life in many ways. You seem to be unable to function because of them. You have to learn to live today without allowing this feeling. Regaining some power and control of your feelings is the key to recovery.
Many therapists feel that having a person suffering from trauma to tell and retell the details of the trauma. However, there is a big debate on this issue. Some counselors and therapists feel this does more harm than good. Reliving the memories may hurt the recovery of one person while another finds it a way to heal.
Whether or not the details of the trauma are discussed in individual therapy, safety must be re-established before real healing can begin. This is the primary focus at the beginning of recovery. Recovery is a process, and there are intentional stages you must go through. It takes time and patience but is well worth the effort. There are three phases to recovery at a Trauma Healing Center.
The first phase is that of safety and stabilization. In this phase, The focus is on the feeling of being unsafe and vulnerable. To regain the sense of security could take weeks with the help of the center. If the trauma is from ongoing abuse, this may even take a year or more. To figure out the exact treatment plan, you and your therapist will need to identify what areas of your life need to be stabilized and the method required to accomplish that.
The second phase is remembrance and mourning. In this phase, you will begin to express the trauma and be able to process it. Then you need to be able to make sense of it. The process for this is either an individual or group therapy with a counselor. Sometimes both are needed. This step is sensitive and must be paced according to your recovery progress. If discussing it seems overwhelming, the therapy may have to back up to phase one and start over. The main thrust of this phase is to mourn the losses associated with the trauma and to feel safe in expressing the feelings about it. It is not to relive the trauma.
The final phase is that of reconnection and integration. In this phase, you will learn to redefine yourself and be able to develop meaningful relationships. It is in this phase that you can cease to allow the trauma to be what determines your thoughts and behaviors. It is now a part of your memory but is unable to control you in any way.
